Obituary for Mary F. Gilcrest

Mary Frances Boswell Gilcrest, was born September 25,1946, to the late Frank and Illinoise Boswell of Lunenburg County. On March 7,2023, God came and asked Mary to come and sing lead alto in his heavenly Choir.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother Frank and Illinoise Boswell, three siblings: Arlene Carroll, Sarah Wright, and Frank Boswell, Jr; and her niece, Charlene Henderson.

She was married to the late Alfred Gilcrest, Jr., to this union three girls where born: Theresa, Miriam (Shaggy) and Sharon. Mary loved bowling, traveling, cooking, fishing, singing and driving the school bus. She drove for Nottoway County Public School for 28 years and two years for the Blackstone Area Bus Service.

Mary was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church (Dinwiddie) where she was the president to the Senior Choir, member of the Gospel chorus, Pastor Aide ministry, Sunday School ministry, and Nursing Ministry of which she was one of the original Nurses for over 25 years. She enjoyed singing and praying, one of her favorite hymns was “It is well with my Soul”.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Theresa Gilcrest, Miriam Gilcrest and Sharon Streat all of Blackstone, VA; two sisters: Ida Hardy (Morris) of Darville and Patsy Knight of Blackstone, VA; sister in law Martha Boswell of Blackstone, VA; four grandchildren: David Gilcrest of Arizona, Michael Gilcrest (Tiffany) of Chester, VA, Carl Gilcrest, and Markcus Hines (Better Known as Mr. Belvidere) her heart, all of Blackstone, VA; five great-grandchildren: Micah, Michael Jr., Camaya, Gabriel, and little Tyler all of Richmond, VA; devoted Nephews, Edward Boswell, Jerome Knight (Tammy); devoted great niece, Tenesha Knight all of Blackstone, VA; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephew, family and friends.

Beloved and devoted friends: May Tucker, Ester Robinson, Rosa Davis, Revered Roger Coleman,Sr., Donita Wooten, Martha Bridgforth, Willa Harrison and her brother in Christ, Dr. David Banks Sr.


Viewing Friday, March 10, 2023 from 1 to 7 PM and Saturday, March 11, 2023 from 12 to 7PM. at W. E Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone, Virginia 23824.  Funeral Service Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00PM at Shiloh Baptist Church Dinwiddie.
