Obituary for Mary E Vaughan
Mary Elizabeth Vaughan, daughter of the late James and Annie Mae Jones was born October 2, 1912 in a little town called Hebron in Wilson, VA.  She grew up with four sisters, Fannie, Lucille, Anna and Virginia, all of whom have preceded her in death.  Throughout her childhood and teenage years, she had only the minimum necessities of life.  She was able to survive through the great depression, segregation and poverty.
Elizabeth was baptized at Bloomfield Baptist Church at an early age and was a faithful member.  She loved attending church services.  She sang in the choir for over sixty years until her health began to decline.  She loved singing church songs, especially “There is a Bright Side Somewhere”.
Elizabeth met and fell in love with the man of her life, Lawrence Vaughan from the Poole Siding area.  They were married at Bloomfield Baptist Church.  This union was blessed with five children, Jim, Hattie, Annie Pearl, Mary Easter and Beatrice.  They were married for fifty years until his death.
Elizabeth worked for several families in the Wilson and Poole Siding area as a housekeeper.  For many years, she cleaned houses, babysat, washed, starched and ironed clothes.  One of the ladies died that she worked for and left her an antique Singer sewing machine with a threaded foot board and wheels that rolled.  After Elizabeth retired, she loved to  make clothes, quilts, clothes pin hanger bags, potholders and small pillows. Elizabeth loved to cook, making her delicious fish cakes and orange juice pound cake, which her grandchildren really loved.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her son, James Vaughan, but leaves to cherish her memory:  five children, Hattie Jones, Annie (Robert) Creighton, Mary Page and Beatrice Creighton; twelve grandchildren, two devoted Douglas and Stepvon Vaughan; fourteen great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; devoted nephew, Jimmy Farley; and a host of nieces, other nephews, and devoted friends.
