Obituary for Mary D. Crowder
Mary entered eternal rest in the presence of our Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Woodlands in Farmville, VA. Affectionately known to many as Mama Crowder. She was the second of seven children born to the late Louise and Hiram Dickerson, Jr. At an early age Mary received Christ, was baptized and joined the Union Branch Baptist Church where her faith began to flourish. She was a member of the Senior Choir, Deaconess and Missionary Ministry, Church Sexton and President of the Pastor’s Aide. Mary was blessed with the gift of singing...outside of her church choir she sang with the Modernaire Gospel Singers for many years.

Mary was a strong woman, she did not have to be in the lime light she just let her light shine. She was always there for her entire family and she instilled in all of them the importance of loving the Lord and to love each other. As she travelled here and there her circle of children began to get bigger and bigger and she would take them under her wings with a big smile and say “I have so many children”. Mary loved all the children that had adopted her as their mom, she had you all surrounding her heart.

As time went on Mary departed her residence and went to Woodlands and carried her love for the Lord and people with her. She would sing to the residents and kept abreast of everything that was surrounding her. During her stay there she gained an additional family. She looked forward to her visits from family and friends and was excited when her church family would come and worship with her and the other residents.

Mary began to look towards heaven way...she knew she did not have long here. Being a woman of God and knowing how far the Lord had brought her...knowing Mary she would begin to sing “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light, take my hand Precious Lord and lead me home”.

She was preceded in death by: her husband Joseph Crowder; son Joseph; grandsons Joseph Jr. and Andy Crowder; brothers Benny and John Dickerson.

Left to cherish her loving memories are her children: Phyllis Sheff (Ronald), Barbara Sheff (Robert), Dallas Crowder (Barbara) and Jackie Wilkinson (adopted); siblings, Florine Bailey, Shirley Trent (John) Hiram Dickerson, III (Joyce) and Robert Dickerson (Sallie); grandchildren, Ronda Sheff, Kathy Bailey (Andre’), Kisma Crowder (LaShawnda), Lachela, Dallas and LaMar Crowder; great grandchildren, Rondell, Demond, Ashley, Kaila, Zion, Devantae, Keyaira, Keyonna, Keyandre, Krystal and Lanay; great-great grandchildren, DaeKwon, Demoni, Malakhi, Makarius, Makhiya, Rakeem, Anyah, Landyn and Sincere; bonded sisters Vera Gibson and Mrs. Vanromondt; devoted friend, Ethel Harris; a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and the supporting staff at Woodland.
