Obituary for Mary "Bannie" Williams
Mary Olivia “Bannie” Williams, age 95 of Blackstone, VA departed this life on May 18, 2009. Daughter of the late Cosby and Alice Doswell, she was born on August 13, 1913. She was a lifelong resident of Blackstone and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor J. W. Megginson. Mrs. Williams “Bannie” and the late Emmett Williams were the proud owners of the Mayflower Inn of Blackstone for over thirty years; serving the Blackstone community with food, beverages and entertainment that inspired and provided the social meeting place for many in the area. Mrs. Williams “Bannie” provided rental properties and housing opportunities for a vast majority of Blackstone residents for many years. She was a proud, demanding, and no nonsense landlord. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Williams, sisters, Dorothy Doswell Spear, Eva Doswell, Lousie Doswell and brothers, Ed Tom Doswell, George Doswell, Harvey “Pudding” Doswell and Howard Doswell. She is survived by her niece, Majorie Sloan of Virginia; nephews, Cosby Doswell of Maryland, Richard “Joe” Evans of Virginia, Howard Green of California and Linwood Green of New York; a host of sisters-in-law, cousins, other relatives and friends.
There will be visitation at the funeral home on Friday, May 22, 2009 from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Services Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Doswell Family Cemetery, Blackstone.
