Obituary for Mary A. Lewis
Mary Alberta “Bertia” Woodley Lewis, the oldest child of the late Noah and Martha Woodley was born October 16, 1929 in Amelia County, VA. She departed this life on Monday, September 30, 2019 at St. Francis Medical Center, Chesterfield, VA.
She was educated in the Amelia schools. She married James Lewis, whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by three sons, Tom, Tommy and Clarence Lewis; a sister, Hattie B.W. Hayes; and a brother, Noah Woodley, Jr.
Throughout her life, Bertia has been a productive member of her church, Union Baptist, Church Road, VA until her health began to decline. She served faithfully on the Usher Board.
Bertia’s life has been a blessing to all who have known her. She leaves to celebrate her life: four sons, John Frank Woodley of Chesterfield, VA, Robert Lewis of Blackstone, VA, Richard and Aubrey Lewis of Amelia, VA; two devoted daughters, Mary Edith and Rosa Lewis of Amelia, VA; one daughter-in-law, Cynthia Woodley of Chesterfield, VA; three grandchildren, Corinta, John L. Woodley of Texas and Jelissa Lewis of Amelia, VA; five great grandchildren of Texas; two sisters, Yvonne Bates of Church Road, VA and Francina Morris of Petersburg, VA; one sister-in-law, Addie L. Woodley of Amelia, VA; one devoted niece she fondly called her “Boo”, Joyce Hayes Fowlkes of Blackstone, VA; a special god-daughter, Tonea Robinson; five other god-children, Precilla and Janee’ Delaney, Travis, Carlos and Jamilla Woodley; Janet Delaney she fondly called her daughter. Bertia’s life is also celebrated by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends which are too many to name! A special devoted friend, Catherine Goode of Amelia.
Funeral Services Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Church Road, VA. Interment church cemetery.
