Obituary for Martha H. Fowlkes
MARTHA JANE FOWLKES entered eternal rest and peace on October 16, 2009 at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville, Virginia. She was born in Nottoway County, Virginia on April 11, 1926 to the late William and Della Hawkes of Blackstone, Virginia. Her son, Tyrone, preceded her in death.
Martha attended Nottoway Training School. At an early age, she joined the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia where she served until relocating to Baltimore, Maryland to obtain employment. After working a while, she returned to Blackstone and met her beloved husband, Harold Fowlkes. They married and eventually moved to Williamsburg to live. When she retired, the couple relocated back to Blackstone and enjoyed country life. She joined the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church on May 24, 1992, under the leadership of Reverend LeRoy Mitchell, where she worshiped until her death. Martha was very strong and fought with everything in her power to stay. But God saw that she was getting weary and called her home. We will truly miss Martha, but know that she had to take that final journey.
Martha leaves to cherish her memory:  her husband, Harold Fowlkes; two brothers, Armstead S. Hawkes, Sr. (Blackstone) and Wayland Hawkes (Randallstown, MD); one sister, Bernell Austin (New York); eight sisters-in-law, Elsie Hawkes (Randallstown), Alice Hawkes, Lucille Hawkes, Eva Fowlkes, Portia Hobbs (Blackstone) Ruby Fowlkes (Williamsburg), Juanita Tucker (Baltimore), Mildred Favors (New Jersey); one brother-in-law, Cloyd Fowlkes (Williamsburg); a devoted niece, Blanche Brown; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
