Obituary for Martha Gladys Elder
MARTHA GLADYS ELDER departed this life on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone, VA. Gladys (as she was known), was the eleventh child born to Henry and Martha Ross. She was born on December 2, 1909 in Nottoway County, VA.
She attended Nottoway County Schools. At an early age she joined Jerusalem Baptist Church where she was a faithful member and worker. She served on several auxiliaries, with the Senior Choir being her passion, singing faithfully until her health declined. She received several recognition from the Ebenezer Baptist Association and recognition for religious education.
She was a faithful follower of the Mighty Kings of Joy.
On July 29, 1928, she married Theodore Elder and fromthis union they were blessed with eleven children.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Virginia Yates, Indiana Wynn, Mary Clark, Cora and Louise Ross; five brothers, George, Charlie, Henry, John and Maxie Ross; three sons, Archie, Theodore and Roosevelt Elder; two sons-in-law, Crawley Sr. and Haywood Jr. Patterson; five grandchildren, Ronnie (Gertrude), Gregory (Archie), Steven and Roland (Clara) and Lawrence (Roosevelt); five great grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory: eight children, Clara (Leon) Bussie of Brooklyn, NY, Elnora Crowder of Baltimore, MD, Charles Elder, Morrine Patterson, Gertrude Elder, Corrine Patterson and Shirley Elder of Blackstone, VA and Danny (Rene) of Henrico, VA; two daughters-in-law, Lillie of Long Island, NY and Hattie Elder of Brooklyn, NY; thirty-nine grandchildren; seventy-eight great grandchildren; fifty-two great-great grandchildren; one great, great-great grandchild, totaling six generations. What a Mighty God she served! She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the community and a devoted caretaker, Elsie Olds.
Funeral Service Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Blackstone with internent in the church cemetery.
