Martha Ann was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Bernice Fondren on October 22, 1943, in Shelby County.
Martha enjoyed her childhood with her bonus sisters and brother, Ellen, Eva, Juanita and Irvin.

Martha relocated to New York in 1966 where she met her husband, Chester Ford. Chester and Martha became one on December 17, 1967 and had five children, Phyllis, Vicky, Chester Jr., Darren and Lamont.

Martha retired in 2009, when she and her husband decided to move to Virginia. She joined Cellar Creek Baptist Church, and was a member of the Daughters In Christ Ministry and the Culinary Ministry.
