Obituary for Marlon Brian Rather
MARLON BRIAN RATHER departed this life suddenly on November 22, 2010, at St. Mary’s County Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland. Marlon was born on August 16, 1972, in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard E. and Barbara B. Rather.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, VA. He later moved his membership to Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Blackstone, VA. There, he served as a Junior Deacon and a Junior Usher where he maintained his membership until his death.
Marlon graduated from Nottoway County High School in 1990, and in 1993, he earned a Law Enforcement certificate from the Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta, VA. On October 8, 1993, he completed Basic Military Training for the U.S. Air Force and served several years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a Security Police Officer. On October 9, 1993 Marlon was wed in holy matrimony to Gwendolyn Denise at Lackland Air force Base, Texas. From this union one child was born, Christopher Michael Richard Rather. In May 2010, he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix. Marlon was employed by the Department of the Navy as a Program Security Manager, PMA-272 for Naval Air Systems Command in Patuxent River, MD.
He was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, as well as member of W.H. Hughes Masonic Lodge #95 PHA, E.B. Harris #64 Royal Arch, King Solomon Council #49 Knights of Pythagoras.
We will always remember Marlon’s smile and sense of humor, which were just as big as his heart. He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of 17 years, Gwendolyn Denise Rather, and one son, Christopher Michael Richard Rather. He was preceded in death by one older brother, Richard E. Rather, Jr. He also leaves to mourn the following: his parents, Richard and Barbara Rather of Blackstone, VA; one brother, Michael B. Rather of Accokeek, MD; one sister, Kimberli Rather-Jones of Clinton, MD; one grandmother, Vivian Mae Watson; his mother-in-law, Nancy Richardson; three sisters-in-law, Caroline York, Sherry Rather, Charlotte Richardson, and Shirley Richardson; four brothers-in-law, Reginald York, Collin Jones Jr., Kenneth Richardson, and Stephen Richardson; 12 nieces and nephews; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
