Marilyn Marie Carter was born in Macon, GA, on June 6, 1949. She was the fourth of six daughters of the late Alvin and Blanche Ruth Thornton.
After a brief residence in Georgia, the family relocated north and made Newark, New Jersey, their home. Marilyn's formative years were spent in the Newark Public Schools system, culminating in her graduation from South Side High School in 1967. Her passion for caring for others led her to earn a nursing degree from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing (Hoboken) in 1972.
Marilyn began her nursing career as a labor and delivery nurse at Martland Hospital in Newark, NJ, before moving to the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) unit. She then served as the Area Nursing Director for the Newark Preschool Council. Upon leaving the Newark Preschool Council, she served as the Director of Nursing of Planned Parenthood of Metro New Jersey in Newark (Washington Street) and East Orange (Central Avenue); she was instrumental in implementing family planning programs and counseling teens on pregnancy prevention. Prior to retirement, she was the Director of Nursing at L&L Clinic (Irvington, NJ) for people seeking treatment for heroin and cocaine addiction. She served as an instructor at Enadex Training Institute (Plainfield, NJ), training the future of Home Health Aides, Certified Nursing Assistants, and Caregivers.
She departed this life peacefully on July 3, 2024, surrounded by loved ones, with her daughter Ryan gently holding her hand.
Marilyn’s caring nature extended beyond her professional life. She was not only a community nurse but also her family's nurse, and she never let us forget that.Marilyn was known for her dedication and compassion as a nurse throughout her career. Her selfless nature extended beyond her professional life; she was a devoted family caregiver, a loving wife, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her unwavering commitment to the well-being of others left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Blanche Thornton, and her sisters, Shirley Scott, Connie Kittrell, and Annie Ruth Thornton.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Milton Carter, three daughters, Courtney Anika Washington, Ryan Marie Carter, and Tiajuanna Bradshaw, and one son, Timothy Bradshaw. She is also survived by her two sons-in-law, Leonard Washington, Jr., and Brandon Jennings, Sr.; two sisters, Barbara J. Spruill and Carol Thomas (Raymond); three Aunts, Jessie Joe White (Rochester, NY), Helen Jordan and Louise Ashmon, both of Georgia, her God-Sister Georgianna Hart (New Jersey), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her legacy will live on through her six Grandchildren, Nastacia Pereira, Devon Hutchins, Jada Hutchins, Ermahdi Davis, Ryan Davis, Brandon Jennings, Jr., and one Great-Grandson, Avery Grey Scatt.
Marilyn's life was a testament to the values of kindness, service, and love. Her memory will be forever cherished by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
