Obituary for Mahlon H. Watson, Sr.
MAHLON H. WATSON, SR., age 87 of Crewe, Virginia passed away Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Blackstone, Virginia surrounded by his family. Mahlon was born March 16, 1921 in Crewe, Virginia the son of the late Lewis E. and Grace A. Perry Watson. He was the fourth of seven children, three preceded him in death.
Mahlon accepted Christ in 1958 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone, Virginia under the leadership of Reverend R.R. Wilkerson. He served in the following ministries: The Young Couples Club, Men’s Group, Senior Choir and the Trustee Board. He was educated in the Nottoway County Public Schools and later served in World War II. After returning home he worked various jobs and retired from Southeast Lumber Company.
On December 26, 1945 he was joined in holy matrimony to Lucille Marion Oliver, the love of his life. He leaves to mourn their loss, his loving wife of 63 years, Lucille and six children, Mahlon Jr. (Christine), Robert (Rayzelle), Carolyn, Dorothy, William and Bernice (Kenneth). One sister, Eva Jones and two brothers, Stanley (Lois) and Winston Watson (Hettie). Eight grandchildren: Bernell Copes (deceased), Delores Baskin (Willie), Keith Vaughan (Veronica), Angela Wynes (Garland), Kim Stewart, Kisha Watson, Denise Watson and Franklin Merritt, Jr. Eight great grandchildren: Crystal Copes, Andre Baskin, Erika and Eric Vaughan, Kyra Watson, Garland Jr., Mariah, and Jonathan Wynes; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Oliver, Lois Watson and Hettie Watson. One brother-in-law, Melvin Oliver and a devoted friend, Deacon Melvin Evans.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW. He loved the outdoors, his animals and was an avid gardener.
Funeral Services Monday, March 2, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Crewe Cemetery, Crewe.
