Obituary for Lora H. Hobbs
Deaconess Lora Jane Hawkes Hobbs, daughter of the late Emma Jane and Dolphus Hawkes, was born January 23, 1921 in Nottoway County, VA and was the fourth of eight children, of which three preceded her in death.  She entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Retreat Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond, VA.
She was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System and at an early age she confessed her faith in Christ and joined Poplar Lawn Baptist Church. There she remained a faithful member and regularly attended services until the decline in her health.  While in service with the church, Lora Jane was a Deaconess of the church for 47 years as well as a member of the Missionary Circle and the Usher Board. She was also a member of Bethune Chapter #224, Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, PHA for over 50 years.
On April 2, 1946, she married Samuel Lincoln Hobbs, Sr., (who preceded her in death).  To this union were born three children, Samuel, Jr. of Houston, TX, Milwood, Sr., of Bowie, MD and Wanda of Glenn Dale, MD.
In her early years, Lora Jane worked at Camp Pickett and in 1962, she and her husband opened S.L. Hobbs Grocery store where she worked until they decided to close in 1989.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: two sons, Samuel, Jr. (Sonny Boy), Milwood, Sr., and one daughter, Wanda; two daughters-in-law Lena and Linda Hobbs; one son-in-law Curt Moore, Sr.; five grandsons Milwood Hobbs, Jr. (Kimberly), Quentin Hobbs (Kelly), Adrian Hobbs, Curt Moore, Jr., and Marcus Moore; two granddaughters Altrice Hobbs and Aiyana Hobbs Vetrano (Michael); three great-grandsons Christopher, Corey and Chase Hobbs; sister-in-law, Portia Hobbs, who lived next door for more than 50 years.  Not only did she have a strong bond to her children, but also to her remaining siblings; three brothers Webster Hawkes, Adolphus Hawkes (Alice) and Lincoln Hawkes (Gertie); one sister Evelyn Johnson who all held special places in her heart.  She also leaves to cherish her memory other relatives and friends and all who live on Poplar Lawn Road. She loved going to the Annual Mack and Margaret Hawkes Family Reunion where she spent time with not only her immediate family, but her extended family of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins and her Uncle Alvin Hawkes, the remaining descendent of Mack & Margaret Hawkes.
