Obituary for Lincoln T Hawkes
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at the day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” II Timothy: 4:6-8
Our righteous and loving Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in His infinite wisdom released from mortal to immortality, Brother Lincoln Travis Hawkes, on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, VA after a declining illness.
Lincoln T. Hawkes was born to the late Dolphus and Emma Jane Hawkes on June 17, 1929, along with seven siblings in which four preceded him in death, Thomas Hawkes, Erma Hobbs, Cornelius Hobbs, and Lora Jane Hobbs.
He attended Nottoway Training School, Nottoway, VA, but later discontinued his education to help his parents by following his dream of working on cars and becoming a self-taught mechanic. His gift of working on cars warmed his heart, which was exemplified throughout the community from Lee Auto Shop, Blackstone, VA. No matter the time of day or hour, if you called on him, he would be right there. He believed God had given him the gift and regardless of monetary rewards or sometimes no pay, the Lord continued to bless him.
On December 8, 1952 he married, Gertie Mae Branch and to this union five children were born. His son, Gerald A. Hawkes, preceded him in death.
He was employed for several years at Barrow Grocery, Blackstone, VA and Roper Lumber Company, Petersburg, VA, but retired from Central State Hospital, Petersburg, VA after 23 years of service as Boiler Plant Supervisor.
He was baptized at the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA at an early age. He worked diligently in the church, where he served as President of the Men’s Club and a member of the usher’s ministry. Lincoln was faithful unto the Lord’s service on Sundays until his health declined.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He left a great legacy and influence on his family and touched each of them in a special way.
Left to cherish his memories, a loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Gertie Branch Hawkes of Blackstone, VA; four devoted daughters, Glennis Marshall (Howard), Zelma Sheppard (Robert) and Brenda Jo Walton (Roderick) all of Petersburg, VA, and Janice Hawkes of Blackstone, VA; eleven grandchildren, Jayfonia Deloatch (James) of Stafford, VA, Travirus (Leo) Thompson of Newport News, VA, Howard J. Marshall, Jr., Gerrod (Rod) Thompson, A’Darryl (AJ) Marshall, Jayne’ Marshall, Eric (Ric) Sheppard, Delbria and Ashleigh Walton, all of Petersburg, VA and Tremayne and Adrian Hawkes of Blackstone, VA; six great grandchildren, Demontae Stewart, Justin Thompson, Alijah and Alexander Deloatch, Samiara Hawkes, and Layla Crawley; one sister, Evelyn Johnson, of Wilsons, VA, two brothers, Adolphus Hawkes (Alice), of Blackstone, VA, and Webster Hawkes of Richmond, VA; sisters-in-law, Pollie Hawkes of Wilmington, DE. and Bernice Foster of Blackstone, VA; one uncle, Alvin Hawkes of Blackstone, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
