Obituary for Lillie Mae Jennings
Lillie Mae Foster was born on February 24, 1931. She is the eldest of six children born to the late Lottie J. Foster and Henry Foster, Sr. of Crewe, VA. Two sisters and one brother preceded her in death.
Lillie affectionately known by many as “Mae Mae” received her formal education at Nottoway Training School, Nottoway VA. At an early age she joined the Union Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Fitz, where she served on the usher board.
In June of 1949 she married Lee Jennings of Crewe, VA. She worked in many capacities, as a cook and was well known throughout Nottoway as a great cook of Chitterlings. She worked for Page Café, Holly Manor, Fort Pickett Food Services, and Nottoway County Public School as a substitute teacher. She is also known for providing child care to many family and friends of the community, namely Darlene, Quentis, Carl, Bradley, Keith Jr. and Taylor. They held a special place in her heart.
There are many memories of Lillie, but none can compare to her love for riding around to “Griffin’s Corner” teaching others her skills in cooking, playing cards, games and how to have fun.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband Lee Jennings, her daughter Shirley J. Oliver (Wesley, Sr.), Larry E. Jennings (Diane), Ronald A. Jennings (Gwendolyn), Arnold “Petey” Jennings (Brenda), and daughter Phyllis Jennings. One special niece Deborah A. Foster that she raised as her own.
Eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren with three granddaughters in-law. One grandchild and one great grandchild preceded her in death. Three sisters Thelma F. Gallion, Mary A. Rowe (James), Bertha Bland, three sisters in law, Alma Williams, Maggie Bassfield (Leslie) and Doris L. Foster. One brother in-law Charlie Jennings (Yvonne) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
Mae Mae left this worldly life to start her new life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Southside Community Hospital, Farmville, VA.
Lillie enjoyed hosted people, sitting on the “veranda” and enjoyed having fun with neighbors and friends. She had her favorite card games and music that was enjoyed by all. When given a chance she would use her warmth, charm and sense of humor to ensure that all around her would have a great time.
Funeral Services Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Jeter Family Cemetery, Crewe.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
