Obituary for Lillian B. Jones
Mrs. Lillian B. Jones was born on August 19, 1930 to the late Harry Z. Epps and the late Deaconess Annie R. Epps, who was also the mother of the church at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Wellville (now Blackstone) Virginia. It was at this same church that Lillian was baptized at the age of 12 where she served in various capacities including choir, musician and Sunday School teacher. She also was an active member of the Youth Church until her departure for college at the age of 17.She attended Spainville Elementary School and graduated from Nottoway Training High School were she rankied 3rd highest in her class. She attended Virginia Theological Seminary & College, Lynchburg, VA. She met Reverend Lewis S. Jones, who sponsored her in Seminary's anchor contest ("Self-Help & Spiritual Independence") and was later crowned "Ms Seminary" by President M.C. Allen. She later married Rev. Jones and continued her education at Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia where she majored in Biology. She also received a Masters Degree and taught biology, math and science at the Junior High & High School level until she retired.She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Charleston, West Virginia and numerous other civic organizations. Her accomplishments in life were many. She had a strong belief in academics and education. She loved her family dearly and had a great desire for them to be the best that they could be. Lillian spent the last portion of her life at the Forum at Knightsbridge, a nursing facility in Columbus, Ohio where she was surrounded with family and friends. She exchanged labor for rest and reward on Saturday afternoon, February 11th.She was preceded in death by her oldest son Otis Z. Jones, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memories: four children, Lewis S. Jones, Jr,. Portage, IN, Wilhemina A. (Freddie) Paulin, Philadelphia, PA, Maritza Gist, Columbus, OH, Royal Jones, Lynchburg, VA, and a daughter-in-law Ruby J. Coats Jones, Columbus, OH; five grandsons, Otis Z. II (Sharon L.), Colin A. (Imani), Michael A. Jones, Columbus, OH, Lyron K. Paulin, Philadelphia, PA and Kidone Fish, Charleston, WV; six great grandchildren, Tyshon S., Dominique S., Daniel L., Colin A. II, Nathaniel S. and Gabriel E. Paulin; one sister, Christine Merriweather, South Ozone Park, NY; cousins, Priscilla Moore and Nannie Stokes, Blackstone, VA and Emily Simmons, Baltimore, MD and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral Services Thursday, February 23, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone with intement in the church cemetery.W.E.
