Obituary for Lewis L. Tucker, Sr.
Mr. Lewis Laveren Tucker, Sr., age 65, entered into eternal rest suddenly on April 1, 2011. He was born in Blackstone, VA on April 7, 1945 to Roy and Bessie Tucker. Lewis was one of seven brothers and a sister, four of whom have preceded him in death. He was married to Grace Ann Morgan Tucker on April 9, 1966 and to this union there were three children.
Lewis was educated in the public schools of Nottoway County and was a graduate of Luther H. Foster High School. His professional forays included employment with Brown & Williamson tobacco factory and concluded with his retirement from the forensic unit at Central State Hospital in 1994. However, Lewis believed in playing as hard as he worked and will also be remembered for his membership with the Soul Drifters motorcycle club and his affection for animals (including the rabbits and pigeons), along with his contagious smile and his sense of humor.
Lewis loved the Lord and knew him as his personal savior. He was a faithful and dedicated servant at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, including his ordination as a deacon in 2007, and continued to serve in any capacity requested even as his health declined. He was also a member of the Senior Choir, where he was known for his soulful rendition of “I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand.”
His legacy will live on through and his memories will be forever cherished by: his dedicated and loving wife, Grace Ann Morgan Tucker; two devoted sons and a daughter, James Tucker, Sr. (friend, Sylvia), Lewis Tucker, Jr. (Stephanie) and Sandra Shaw (James); two brothers and a sister, James Henry Tucker (Elizabeth), Cloyd Tucker (Inez) and Shirley Hardy (Robert); his grandchildren, James Tucker, Jr., Whitney Shaw, Kyah Tucker and Kourtney Tucker; a beloved “special granddaughter,” Shamia “MeMe” Morgan; five sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Sylvia Morgan, Ida Jiggetts (Linwood), Jean Morgan, Aretha Tucker, Mae Tucker and Clarence “Don” Morgan; one aunt, Ernestine Tucker; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers who affectionately called him “Big Daddy”, and other relatives, friends among them several devoted ones, including his daughter-in-law Cheryl and Pastor Tyree and Michelle Smith and children.
As you go onward carrying your own special memories of Lewis, forget not the sweetness of his heart nor the strength of his character and take forth the words below in his memory:
“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
Funeral Services Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
