Obituary for Lettie Mae Eppes
LETTIE MAE EPPES was born April 29, 1921 in Blackstone, VA. She was the youngest of nine children born to the late Norman Eppes, Sr. and Lettie Tomas Eppes of Blackstone, VA.
At a very young age, after the death of her mother, Lettie was sent to live with her aunt, the late Mrs. Bessie Dennis in New York City. There she received her education in the public schools. She graduated from Yorksville High School in New York City, with training in nursing education.
She was employed for many years at Manhattan State Hospital, also Brooklyn State Hospital in New York.
Lettie was baptized at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, New York City under the pastorship of the late Reverend Clay Maxwell.
In 1949 she was united in marriage to the late Hunter Campbell Eppes.
In 1983 she retired from Forest View Nursing Home, she was employed there for over fifteen years, the job was most fulfilling.
In December of 1983, they moved back to Blackstone, VA and in January of 1984, she joined Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church under the pastorship of Reverend John Winbush and remained a faithful member until death.
She leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Mrs. Doris L. Griffis of Baltimore, MD; one grandson, Maurice C. Hodges (Ruth) of Port Orchard, Washington; two great grandchildren, Amanda and Nathan Hodges; five step grandchildren, Micheal Eppes, Sandra Burden, Gwen Rather, Hope Rather and Cynthia Yvonne Walker; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Foster, Martha Allen, Mary Lou Green, Joyce Green, Michelle Prout, Willie Epes, Freeman Epes, Edward Black, Samuel Stokes, and Jeff Stokes.
Funeral Services Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
