Obituary for Leslie Lee Bassfield
Leslie Lee Bassfield entered into eternal rest Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Place of Comfort LLC., Hopewell, VA.
Leslie was born to the late Melinda Oliver and Leslie William Bassfield on November 9, 1932 in Nottoway County. He accepted Christ and joined Union Baptist Church, Crewe, VA. Leslie served as parking attendant during Revival and the Custodian for over twenty years at Union Baptist Church.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to his one true love, Maggie Jennings on October 31, 1954. To this union they were blessed with nine children.
Leslie was employed by Norfolk and Western Railroad over twenty years.
“Strawfield” was a nickname given to him in the early 60’s. He loved hunting, fishing, especially baseball where he played for the Screaming Eagles; he also loved drag racing on “49”, the Six O’clock news with Walter Cronkite and above all “He Loved His Family”. One of his favorite quotes was, “Turn that bed loose” (which means time to get up). Sleeping in late and being lazy was not an option.
Leslie was preceded in death by many of the above maned, his wife; Catherine, his daughter and Pernice Robertson, Sr., whom he loved as a brother.
Leslie leaves a legacy of love and laughter. He leaves to cherish his loving memories his daughters: Ella, Linda and Evelyn; caring sons: Alphus (Helen); Mark (Olivia); Warren (Lora); Carl (Renee’); Alvin (Darlene ) and Lynell (Melinda) whom he loved as his son; two grandsons that was always close by and dear to him: Kevin (Tammy) and Bryan; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, First Cousins: Rev. Richard Rather (Dorothy), Thelma Rather, Lula R. Blackwell, Daniel Rather, Lorraine Rather. Leslie Lee and his first cousins were raised with love and kindness as sisters in brothers.
Devoted friends Carmichael (Mike) Hurt, Natalie Robertson, Bessie Ransome, Lois Wallace-Harris and Harold Oliver.
Memorial Services will be held Sunday, April 24, 2022 at 1:00PM at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, 504 East St., Blackstone, VA 23824
