Obituary for Leslie E. Goodman, Sr.

On April 15th, 2011 at about 2:00 pm, the Lord in all of His power, glory, and love, called home one of His faithful servants, Leslie Edward Goodman Sr.
Born June 6th, 1918, Leslie was one of twelve children born to Lester and Laura Goodman of Amelia, Virginia. A devout Christian and family man, married to Gertrude Florence Smith for almost 65 years, and the father of six children. Leslie led by example with the values, beliefs, dedication, and discipline that carried him through a lifetime of love, honor, and admiration from all who met him and knew him. Leslie was a true pioneer as a Black-American man, establishing many precedents and accomplishments that set the bar very high for those who would follow. As a young man at the age of seventeen, Leslie set out for Long Island, New York, where he worked in the agriculture and farming industry. He quickly captured the attention of those who employed him, and became the foreman of Warner Farms, helping it to become one of the most prominent and successful businesses of its time. Leslie played an enormous part in changing the pay system for farm workers on Long Island. He then continued on to become one of the first Black-American union carpenters and general contractors in New York for over 50 years; building Long Island and the surrounding areas to what it is today. A man of principle and character, Leslie was the best at whatever he put his hands to, and left his mark and the standard by which others would aspire to achieve. He will truly be missed.
He is survived by five of his children, Joyce, Leslie Jr., Alan (deceased), Ronnie, Linda and Benjamin. Brothers Earl, Jimmie Rand, Ralph, sisters Laura and Sarah, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary and Nancy, daughters-in-law Petra and Ellen, son-in-law Bevan, and a host of nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends. We are all blessed to have shared a moment in time with this man, LESLIE EDWARD GOODMAN SR.
Viewing will be Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m.   The family will visit with friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral Services Friday, Aptil 22, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Little Union Baptist Church, Amelia with burial in the church cemetery.
Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home of Amelia in charge of arrangements.
