Obituary for Leroy "Son" Hickson

On September 12, 1952 in Lake City, South Carolina, Samuel Hickson, Sr. and Maggie Lee Brown Hickson gave birth to their fifth born child, LEROY HICKSON. At an early age he was a member of Saint John’s Baptist Church in Lake City, South Carolina where he was baptized. He attended school in Lake City, South Carolina and Paterson, New Jersey. In 1960 he moved to Paterson, New Jersey with his parents and siblings. Leroy was later employed at the National Security Company. He married Marion M. Haskins and to this union four children were born, Tishia, Vincent, LaShennia and LaShonnia. He worked as a security officer for many years and when work became limited, Leroy moved his family to Burkeville, Virginia in 1984. He was then employed as a correctional officer for several years at the Nottoway Correctional Center in Burkeville, Virginia. Leroy was a very loveable and well-known person, on the job, in church and in his community to the young and old. He loved to sing, perform and entertain to all of James Brown’s songs. Because of Leroy’s popularity, he was given the nickname “James Brown” by his family and friends. He later worked for Taylor Ramsey Company of Blackstone, Virginia and when his health failed, he was later admitted to Trinity Mission and Rehabilitation Center in Farmville, Virginia. Leroy departed his earthly life on January 4, 2008 at 8:52 p.m. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Rebecca Hickson, Vernet Hickson, Mary Julia Hickson and one brother, Willie Carson Hickson. At the age of fifty-five, he leaves to remember him: his four beloved children, Tishia, Vincent, LaShennia and LaShonnia all of Blackstone, Virginia; two sisters, Thelma Marie Harrison and Iris Jenkins (Albert); three brothers, Samuel Hickson Jr. (Barbara), Josh Hickson (devoted friend Valerie) and Thomas Hickson; three aunts, Mary Alice Holte, Curtis Jean Brown (Mother Mack) and Bessie Hickson; five grandchildren, Jamar Holte, Lataye Haskins, Kyaaliyan, Katanna and O’Liyah Hickson; a devoted friend, Marion Hickson Dance; and a host of nieces and nephews.
