Obituary for Lamont F. Downs

Elder Lamont F. Downs of Crewe, Virginia, met his Savior face to face on Monday, December 31, 2012.  He was 47 years old.  The youngest son of Alphonsia C. Downs, Jr. and Beatrice Butcher Downs, Elder Downs was born October 9, 1965 in Richmond, Virginia.  He confessed his faith at the age of 10, was baptized and joined First Nottoway Baptist Church.

Elder Downs graduated from Nottoway High School, Nottoway, Virginia, June, 1984; furthered his education at ECPI University, Richmond, Virginia.

Elder Downs joined the United States Air Force in 1991 and remained in active service for six years.  After being honorably discharged, he later matriculated at Devry University with his focus on Technology.  Elder Downs interest in technology and his desire to gain extensive knowledge in it, led him to his employment at Intel, New Mexico.  His expertise in technology took him on a tour of overseas work in Afghanistan. 

He met and married his wife, Vivian, October 11, 1999 in New Mexico.  He received his call to the ministry in 2000.  He worked diligently and studied to become “the man after God’s own heart”.  He was often called to minister to groups, individuals and to congregations professing his love for Christ.  His wife, Vivian, was a willing partner in his ministry and worked with him in his ministry in South Carolina at SRD Ministries.  He was employed in South Carolina at SAIC Eagan McAllister Associates, Inc., South Carolina.

In 2011, Elder Downs, along with his wife, decided to come back to his roots in Crewe, Virginia.  Their desire to become more involved with the community of faith and to devote time and talent to uplifiting the kingdom of God,  Elder Downs reaffirmed his membership with First Nottoway and his wife joined the church in November, 2012.

He leaves to cherish precious members his wife, his parents, children, Ebony and Ronald “Sentel” Yearns; his grandmother, Mary B. Downs; brother, Cato (Dorothy) of Chesterfield, sister, Veronica; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Lee) Jamerson; four grandchildren; uncles, Thomas (Beverly) Butcher, Charles (Pearl) Butcher, McCarthy (Jackie) Downs, Samuel (Jackie) Downs; aunts, Ethel Hobbs, Mary Delois Avery, Thelma (Dewey) Duff; nieces and nephews, Leroy, Daniel, Ian, KeeKee; Starr, Brandon, DeAndrea and D’Atra; other family members and friends.

Funeral Services Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe with burial in the Downs Family Cemetery, Crewe.
