Obituary for Karen A. Hurt
Karen Annette Hurt departed peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Med Star Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, MD. She was born in Prince Edward County, VA on October 1, 1963, to Elizabeth V. Hurt and Joseph L. Palmer.
She received the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior at an early age and was baptized and became a member of the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, VA, where she served on the Junior Usher Board.
Karen graduated from Nottoway Senior High School in 1982. She was well known for playing many sports, basketball, track and softball. She received many accolades for these sports. After graduating, she attended Virginia Union in Richmond, VA majoring in accounting. During this time she was a member of Virginia Union University (VUU) Womens’ Basketball Team where they won a NCAA Division II Championship in 1993. In March of 2020, the VUU Womens’ Basketball Team was inducted into the NCAA Hall of Fame.
Karen enlisted in the United States Navy as active duty on July 20, 1987. She reported for duty on board the USS Shasta (AE-33 from June, 1990, to November 1993. She was on board the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in the War on Serve from July 1999, to September, 2003. Karen received many distinguished awards during her service for the U.S. Navy upon her retirement in 2007.
Karen was preceded in death by her grandmother, Eva V. Hurt; uncle, Willie Hurt, Jr.; aunt, Avis Branch; two brothers, Joseph and Jamir Palmer. She leaves to cherish her memories: her mother, Elizabeth V. Hurt; father Joseph L. Palmer (Betty); half sister, Bianca Palmer; devoted aunts, Mary Eggleston (Harvey) and Pearline Hurt; uncle, Roger Branch; eight devoted cousins, Lorenzo Branch (Renee), Shelia Overby (Charles) who was like a sister to her, Larry Branch (Jacqueline), Landus Smith (Tangila), Shawn Hurt (Tonya), Jermaine Hurt, Landus Smith Jr. (L.J.) and Angel Overby; and a host of nieces, nephews, devoted family and friends.
