Obituary for Juanita E. Allen
On February 7, 2015, Thy Lord spoke to his Angel telling her it was her appointed time to come home and her purpose on earth, set apart from all others, had been fulfilled. Surely she wondered if she had done all and loved all according to his commandments. We believe that on that day at 6:27pm Juanita heard the trumpets playing, the bright light shine, and heard the still voice say, “Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant.” With her breathing diminishing until the last breath she exhaled in peace, closed her eyes and accepted her rest.
Juanita was born to the late Alexander and Myrtis Lorraine Gray on April 27, 1923, she shared their love with nine siblings and she was the second eldest. Six of her siblings preceeded her (Andrew, Wilber, Thomas, Robert Edward Gray; Cleopatra Green and Virginia Gray). She became the matriarch of the family very early after her mother passed when she was 24 years of age.
Juanita found her love Claude Allen and wedded February 16, 1940. (This is the first Valentines Day they will spend together in 14 years.) From that union of love born the sunshine of their lives, Clarence E. Allen Sr. (Baby Boy). She was educated in the Nottoway Public School system. Her acceptance of Christ and baptism was at an early age. In her later years, after rearing her son and in agreement with her husband, she traveled for some years between New York and Washington, DC, coming home on the weekend, in search of her career. Through her journey, she worked in varied capacities from childcare to mental health professional. In 1969, Juanita graduated from Calvinade Beauty Academy in Washington and became a licensed beautician. She returned to Crewe and opened her shop in the town. She later remodeled her home and established a beauty parlor. With that desire to help others, love for others, and the gift of giving, she returned to school for her license as an Instructor in Cosmetology. Her dream, Allen's Beauty Salon was opened in 1983. Juanita taught over 100 state licensed beauticians from the varying counties throughout Virginia. She served in multiple capacities to her students and taught much more than classroom knowledge.
As a Faithful Servant at Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Crewe, VA, (Mother Allen) served until she was unable to as a Deaconess, President/Member of the Ushering Board, Church Treasurer. She demonstrated her love for God, community and church members. She was always willing to do and to teach others how to do. When it was time for Homecoming, Anniversaries, Special Occasions with guest, there was never a second thought that the fried chicken was ordered, the ham cooked and cut, rolls were fluffy, and chocolate cake was mouthwatering
In 1972, Juanita became the Founder of Sister's Unlimited, Inc. a public service social organization with the mission of providing support to school children (scholarship fund) and supporting the geriatric population. During her 90th birthday celebration a scholarship fund was established. These funds will be dispersed during the Spring of 2015 in her honor to cosmetology students preparing for state board examination to offset the cost.
Juanita leaves to carry on her Love, Faith, Endurance, and Strength: Her loving son: Clarence E. Allen Sr. and wife Donnella; Grands: Debbie, Clarence Jr. (June), Maurice; Step Grands: Antonio Smith, Nicolle Smith; Great Grands: Marcus, Diamond, Maurice, Mariah, Miles, (step) Quentin; Great Great Grands: Dylan, Orlando; Step Great Grands: Latoya, Alyvia, Nakya, Domonic, Xaeria; Sister: Lavada Pines, Hermenia Stokes; Sisters-in-law: Gloria & Cloris Grey; Brothers-in-laws: Mark Pines, William Stokes; Host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, past students, and friends.
Juanita leaves a legacy that will never die. We will see her everyday still through our learned faith in God, our continuous prayers, our love and caring for family and others and making amends to anyone we hurt. She always believed: “Be Ready When Jesus Comes ”.
