Obituary for Joyce Hackney Charity
Joyce Allene Hackney Charity was born on September 15, 1951 in Amelia County. She peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, July 1, 2008. She was employed at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for seven years and retired from the City of Richmond in 2001 with 30 years of service. Joyce was an Elder at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church in Amelia, Virginia and was also an affiliated member at Woodville Presbyterian Church.
She was very active in several organizations: President of Board of Directors -The Young Women’s Christian League, Board of Directors – University of Richmond Alumni Association, Presbyterian Woman of the Presbytery of the James, Director & Secretary of Bride of Christ, Treasurer – Golden Hearts Chapter, Bellwood Toastmasters Club, Member of the 23rd Investment Group, Secretary – Black Caucus of the Presbytery of the James and volunteered with The Family Advocacy Clinic. In 1969 she graduated from Russell Grove High School in Amelia County and graduated with honors from the University of Richmond with a degree in Liberal Arts in 2000.
On June 26, 1981 she married James H. Charity, Jr. and from their union was born a son James H. Charity, III and a daughter Kristi Charity Harris. She was preceded in death by her father, Curtis Hackney, Sr. and is survived by a son-in-law Jean Harris; grandson, Carter Alexander Harris; mother, Sophia Hackney; six sisters, Shirley Hackney; Robin Slye (Charles); Terry Fuller (Bernard); Crystal Smith (Jerry); Norma Johnson; Daner Capel (Acie); one brother, Curtis Hackney, Jr. (Valerie) several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends, one devoted friend of 38 years, Betty Jean Carter.
Viewings, Saturday, July 5, at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home in Amelia from 3 until 7 p.m and Sunday, July 6 at Mimms Funeral Home in Richmond from 10:00 a.m. where family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Services Monday, July 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodville Presbyterian Church, 1728 N. 28th St., Richmond, Va. with interment in the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, Amelia.
