Obituary for Joyce F. Smith
On Tuesday afternoon, September 27th, at the home of Carl and Michelle, the Lord came and cradled his child, Joyce Fowlkes Smith into his arms and carried her to the Eternal Home that he had prepared for her. Joyce was born on November 1, 1946 to Christine Fowlkes Willis. She was nurtured by her grandparents, Clarence and Lucy Jeter, who preceded her in death, and her cousin Arnold Jeter, whom she considered her brother. Her stepfather, Clifford Willis preceded her in death.
Joyce was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System and graduated from the Luther H. Foster High School in 1965. She furthered her education at Norfolk State College and Southside Community Hospital School of Nursing. Upon receiving a degree as a LPN, she gained employment at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville. She loved her job and worked in that position until her retirement in 2004.
Joyce was married to Earl J. Smith in 1968 and to this union two sons were born. She raised her grandson, DC, whom she adored and he even called her “Mom” along with JR and Kristen. Joyce nieces and nephews simply loved to be around her. She often took them aside to offer advice on various issues.
At an early age, Joyce was baptized and joined the Macedonia Baptist Church in Burkeville where she served actively with the Alms House Ministry. She loved children, senior citizens, her family and friends as well as playing Bingo with her friend, Iona Lee. She would often follow Earl Jr. and Mearl when they went to race their cars at the Drag Strip.
Along with her mother, Christine F. Willis, she leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted sons, Earl Jr. (Christina) and Carl (Michelle); grandchildren, Earl III (aka JR), Kristen, Deontre (aka DC), Dajahna, Carl Jr., Shaisha, Chantel and adopted TamBrea; brother-in-law, Mearl (Edith); sister-in-law, Constance (Edward), brother-in-law, Clarence Jr. (Katherine); mother-in-law, Betty Smith: uncle, Lloyd Taylor; nephews, Tony (Tammi), Troy (Tanya), Edward III (Juanita), devoted niece, Vhondrena (Prosser), niece and godchild, Eddrina (Christopher), Landus (Tangila); a host of devoted great nieces and nephews, cousins, classmates, relatives, church family and friends, especially her best friend and sidekick, Bessie Stith.
