Joyce Anita Butler-Washington, Spotsylvania, VA died Monday, June 5, 2023, at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Joyce was born November 28, 1962, in Philadelphia, PA to Heyward and Elizabeth (Parks) Butler. She graduated from Overbrook Senior High School in 1980 and the University of Mary Washington in 2015. On September 30, 1992, she married Franklin D. Washington in Virginia Beach, VA. They were an active-duty military family in the United States Navy and lived in: Catania (Sicily) Italy, St. Mary County, Maryland and returned to Virginia Beach, VA where they retired from active-duty service. The couple settled in Spotsylvania, VA in 2003 and attained a lovely permanent home for their family.
Joyce was a strong, ambitious, intelligent, loving and caring parent who believed in service to the Lord and others. She volunteered to service as a wartime ombudsman. Joyce dedicated her life to helping others and to be the best person she could be possible. Known as Momma Washington—she was quick with a smile, a story, a meal, and advice. Her motto that she said and lived by was “no child should go hungry or be without”.
She is survived by her husband, Franklin of Spotsylvania, VA, a daughter, Angela of New York, NY, sons: Antonio of Los Angeles, CA, Alexander of Rochester, MN, and Franklin Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, along with 4 grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters: Mary Butler of Yeadon, PA, Jasmine Wardlaw of Los Angeles, CA, an aunt, Dorthey of Philadelphia, PA, an uncle, Rev. Willie Dillard of Queens, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.
