Joseph Thomas Lewis, Jr., affectionately known as "Junie" or "Joe," was born on August 13, 1947, to Louise Laverne Lewis and the late Joseph T. Lewis, Sr. On Thursday, October 30, 2025, Joe peacefully and quietly transitioned at the Canterbury Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Joe was a gentle spirit who lived his life with quiet strength, kindness, and humility. Always smiling and laughing, he brought warmth to every room he entered. He took immense pride in caring for his home, maintaining his vehicles, and keeping lawns beautifully manicured—both his own and those of others. His love of lawnmowers, tractors, and his trucks reflected the care and attention he brought to all aspects of his life.
A man of few words but immense heart, Joe was selfless in every sense. He gave freely of himself without seeking recognition, and his love for family and community was evident in his steady, dependable presence.
Joe was baptized at an early age and joined Union Baptist Church, where his faith was nurtured and strengthened. After retiring, he returned to his church home to serve faithfully as a Trustee and a member of the Usher Board, giving back to the community that had shaped him.
Joe graduated from high school in 1967 and went on to attend Southside Virginia Community College, where he obtained a degree in electronics. He was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served his country in Germany as a nurse aide. After being discharged from active duty, he later joined the U.S. Army Reserves, serving honorably in the 257th Supply Company from 1974 to 1998. During his time in the Army Reserves, he earned the Army Reserve Achievement Award. He also achieved the highest level of security clearance, reflecting his dedication, integrity, and excellence.
Throughout his life, Joe built an impressive career in various professional roles, including positions with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, AT&T Technologies, AT&T Wireless, Lucent Optical Fiber Solutions, and Wrigley U.S. Co. His work reflected his unmatched reliability, dedication, and work ethic.
Even in his later years, when facing the challenges of dementia, Joe remained strong, humorous, and full of grace. He never complained and continued to connect meaningfully with his loved ones. His memory, laughter, and gentle presence will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph T. Lewis, Sr., and his siblings Irving Lewis and Georgia Vance. Joe leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Cornell Tinsley-Lewis; his three children, Pamela Lewis, Michael Tabon, and Ashton Lewis; his two stepsons, Quincy Tucker and Myron Davis Jr.; his beloved mother, Laverne Lewis; and five siblings, Tyree Lewis (Donna), Dreamer Royal (Duane), Maurice Lewis, Edwanto (Ed) Jefferson, and Mark Jefferson. He is also survived by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one aunt, Frances Scott; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Delicia "Dee" Vance for her compassion and support during Joe's journey with dementia. Her care and kindness brought him comfort and peace. The family also wishes to recognize Casey Lewis, a nurse at the rehabilitation center, who cared deeply for Joe and demonstrated extraordinary devotion in ensuring his comfort and well-being. Casey consistently went above and beyond his scheduled duties, remaining by Joe's side with unwavering dedication, and was there to lovingly accompany him as he peacefully took his last breath.
Joe's life was one of service, humility, and quiet strength—a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
