Obituary for Joseph Thomas Johnson
Joseph Thomas Johnson was born in Amelia, VA to the late Dupey and Adlena Johnson on November 24, 1930. “Joe Thomas” as most family and friends called him has spent his entire life at the family home place in Amelia County.
Joe Thomas spent the majority of his retired life as he would put it “taking it easy.” He loved to hunt, but due to declining health the past few years he mostly watched television and relaxed.
Joe entered into holy matrimony with Helen William Hayes on November 27, 1993. Helen has stayed by his side throughout his illness and in his final days.
Joe Thomas departed this earthly life on June 21, 2008 at Amelia Nursing Home. He is preceded in death by both parents and one brother George Johnson. His memories are left to be cherished by his loving wife Helen; stepdaughter, Kandy Hayes (Eddie Petty, Sr.); stepson Alfus Hayes, Jr. (Brenda Dawson); six step grandchildren; three brothers, Leander Johnson of Stratford, VA, Roosevelt Johnson of Richmond, VA and Sam Johnson of Charlotte, NC; one sister Juanita Peterson of Brooklyn, NY; seven sisters-in-law, Alice Johnson, Ethel Johnson, Irene Johnson, Dorothy Hayes, Mary A. Williams, Carolyn Williams and Catherine Williams; three brothers-in-law, Henry Hayes, Samuel Williams and Benny Williams; mother-in-law, Francis Williams; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; three devoted cousins, Bobby Delaney, Laura Delaney and Mary Ann Hill. He had one special grandson who loved to make him laugh, Nicholas Hayes.
Funeral Services Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Branches Runn Baptist Church, Amelia with interment in the church cemetery.
Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home of Amelia in charge of the arrangements.
