Obituary for Joseph L. Harris, Jr.
Deacon Joseph Lee Harris, Jr. was born in Nottoway County on May 26, 1920 and departed his very blessed life on December 18, 2016 at his home,1927 Stingy Lane Road, Blackstone, Virginia. He was born to the late Joseph Lee Harris, Sr. and Nannie Fitzgerald Harris. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Rhoda Harris Hackett.
He was educated in the Nottoway County School system, then later served in the United States Army from December 1942 until December 1945. He joined in holy matrimony with Alberta Fowlkes Harris in September 1946 and to this union one daughter, Cassandra was born.
He was employed with the Nottoway County School system for over 30 years before retiring.
Deacon Harris joined the Mt. Gazerine Baptist church at a young age and served until the end of his journey. He served as Trustee, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Deacon, Chairman of the Burial Committee, and was the Superintendent of the Sunday School for over 30 years, totaling over 60 years of service. He regularly attended the Poplar Lawn Sunday School Union and was a former member of the Evergreen-Benjamin Lodge, PHA.
Joseph was most satisfied being at home among his family, going to church and gardening
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife, Alberta; his faithful daughter, Cassandra and a beloved, supportive son-in-law, Michael Carrington of Richmond, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Bessie Barrett, New York City; one brother-in-law; John Fowlkes (Irene), Baltimore, Maryland; one step brother-in-law, Junious Oliver, Baltimore, Maryland;Â one step sister-in-law, Virginia Keeton, Baltimore, Maryland; four nieces; Brenda Hayward, Woodbridge, VA; Amanda Fisher; New York City; Terry Blume, Sevren Maryland; 4 nephews, Duane and Vincent Barrett, New York City; Tracy and Randell Fowlkes, Baltimore Maryland; one step niece, Jackie Oliver, Baltimore, Maryland and several great nieces, great nephews and many, many loving relatives and dear friends.
Funeral Services Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church, Blackstone. Interment Harris Family Cemetery.
