Obituary for Joseph Johnson
Joseph Johnson was born on October 15, 1917, the only child of the late Sara Johnson. Â He was born and raised in Cumberland County, VA. Â Joseph was called home on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Holy Redeemer Hospice in Meadowbrook, PA.
He attended the Green Creek School. Â At an early age he accepted Christ at the Green Creek Baptist Church. Â He worked at Camp Pickett Army Base, currently known as Fort Pickett, until he relocated.
In 1942, Joseph Married Omega Lee. Â To this union was born their son, Leon Johnson. Â In 1943, they relocated to Philadelphia, PA. Â Joseph Worked at A.P. Green Manufacturers until he retired in 1982. Â Shortly after moving to Philadelphia, he joined Second Baptist Church of Frankford under the leadership of Reverend J.C. King. Â Joseph worshipped and served as a faithful member for 70 years. Â He was a member of the Trustee Board for over 40 years and was awarded the title "Trustee Emeritus". Â Joseph's greatest joys were going to church and spending time with his family. Â He also enjoyed watching television and traveling to Cape Cod, MA and Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Omega; his sisters-in-law, Murray, Vera and Janet; and brothers-in-law, Benjamin, Clinton and Perry "Banks". Â His sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law were like siblings to him.
He leaves to cherish his memory: Â his son, Leon Johnson; daughter-in-law, Clara Johnson; three grandchildren, Elcindor Johnson, Marquita Johnson and Nicole Johnson (Reginald Johnson, Sr.); three great grandchildren, Darian Hill, Jr., Josiah Johnson and Reginald Johnson, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Queen Lee and Mattie Day; brothers-in-law, Lewis Lee, Alvin Lee (Helen Lee) and Mark Lee (Mary Lee); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
In Appreciation: Â Vernell Bodie who prepared dinner for him weekly; Dorothy Chisholm who visited frequently bringing him his favorite sweet treats and watching Saturday night church services; and Edna Edwards who engaged in many conversations about church.
Viewing will be held for Mr. Johnson on Thursday, May 29 at High Rock Baptist Church, Rice from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Â Interment church cemetery.
