Obituary for Jon D. Harris, Sr.
Born February 18, 1933 in Nottoway County Virginia to the union of McKinley and Mamie Lee Harris, Jon moved from his earthly home in Crewe, VA to his Heavenly home on Tuesday, November 19, 2019.
Jon confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at New Prospect Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Wilkerson. He was educated in the Nottoway school system.
His desire for travel led him to New York City, where he began a new life and a career with Firestone Tire Company as a mechanic and driver. After retiring from Firestone, Jon continued his chosen profession as a truck driver during the day, and driving a cab at night. While living in New York Jon joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he faithfully served as an active member and usher for many years. In 1978 Jon joined the Keystone #5 AF&AM Masonic Lodge, where he served as the Worshipful Master from 1982 until1986.
Upon his retirement and return to Virginia, Jon reinstated his commitment to his home church, New Prospect Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend David Fitzgerald and his current pastor, Reverend Joseph A. Jones. He faithfully served on the usher board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and president of the cemetery committee until his health declined.
On September 4, 1955 Jon was joined in Holy Matrimony to his partner for life, Ms. Mary L. Person. This bond remained unbroken for 64 years. To this union was born four children, Michael, Jon Jr, Deborah and Brian.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, McKinley and Mamie Lee Harris; two brothers, Collis and William Harris; two sisters, Fanny Mae Bend and Rosa Margaret Mason; daughter, Deborah E. Jute; sons, Reverend Michael S. Person and Jon D. Harris, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Harris of Crewe, VA; one son, Brian Harris (Peaches) of Deland, FL; one aunt, Caroldine Wallace of Norfolk, VA; one brother, Lawrence V. Harris (Lanette) of Blackstone, VA; four sisters, Barbara Carpenter (Otis) of Lawrenceville, VA, Eyvonne Harris of Kenbridge, VA, Vannice and Virginia Harris of Blackstone, VA; two daughters-in-law, Brenda Person of Lithonia, GA and Linda Harris of Blackstone, VA; one son-in-law, Garnette Jute of Maryland; five grandchildren, Jason, Tiffany, Michael Jr,. Mariah and Nyka; four great grandchildren, Zykia, Emerson, Gabriella and Skylar; one great-great grandson, Zy’mere; several dedicated and loving nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 12:00 noon at New Prospect Baptist Church, Blackstone. Interment private.
