Obituary for Johnny W. Birdsong, Jr.
Johnny Wrenn Birdsong, Jr. was born January 29, 1947 to Vivian and the late Johnny Wrenn Birdsong, Sr. On Wednesday, June 12, 2013 our be-loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend was called home to eternal rest.
At an early age, Johnny accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, Virginia. As an active member of Eleven Oaks, Deacon Birdsong sang on the choir, in which he did solos. He was Chairman of the Pastor Select Committee, Assistant Chairman of the Deacon Board and he performed various other ministry tasks. He served faithfully in the community and with other surrounding churches. He was a member and Past Master of Evergreen-Benjamin Lodge #131 of Crewe, VA. He was Head Chairman of The Knights of Pythagoras, a member of the Royal Arch Mason E. B. Harris Lodge #64 and the chaplain of the 15th Masonic District Council and the Evergreen Benjamin Lodge #131.
He received his high school diploma from Luther H. Foster High School, Nottoway, VA. Johnny began his career with Norfolk and Southern Rail-road where he retired after 36-years of dedicated service.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 46-years, Velma Ford Birdsong; 3-daughters: Patrice Birdsong of Upper Marlboro, MD, Tracy Lumpkin of Ft. Washington, MD, and Terry Bird-song of Upper Marlboro, MD. One son, Phillip Birdsong of Ft. Washing-ton, MD and a son-in-law Gregory Lumpkin. Three grandchildren: Eb-ony Birdsong, Davion Birdsong and Erin Oliver. His mother, Vivian Birdsong-Watson of Crewe, VA; Five sisters, Barbara (Richard) Rather of Blackstone, VA, Denise (Linwood) Stokes of Waldorf, MD, Deborah (Marvin) Vaughan of Troy, VA, Margie Hawkes (Julian Ford) of Chester, VA and Shirley (Darrell) Neal-Clark of Richmond, VA; two brothers, George (Delores) Birdsong of Richmond, VA and Keith Birdsong of Ft. Washington, MD; two step sisters, Cora (Joseph) Rice, Juanita (Tony) Ross; one step-brother, Waverly (Grace Ann) Watson; one sister-inlaw, Vanessa (Christopher) Moore, Upper Marlboro, MD.; five brother-inlaws: Andrew (Myra) Ford and Bernard (Trudy) Ford, Amelia, VA., Henry (Debra) Ford, Phoenix, VA, Tyree (Jeanette) Ford, Eric (Sandra) Ford of Crewe, VA.; one aunt Ruth B. King; two uncles, Charles (Annette) Birdsong, Warren (Norma) Robertson and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Devoted family friends: Calvin Jennings, Charles Carter, James Jackson and Jacqueline Ford.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, June 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Blackstone Conference & Retreat Center-VUMAC with interment to follow in the Crewe Cemetery.
