Obituary for John H. Thomas, Sr.
Today is not a day of death, but rebirth because he lived a long and healthy life here on earth. So on this day we will look back no more, because on this day we know he’s with you, Jesus Christ our Lord. The man that we refer to was a husband, father, brother, grandfather and dear friend for when our time comes, we know that we will see him again.
John Thomas departed this life at Johnston Willis Medical Center on Monday, February 1, 2010. He was preceded in death by his son, Perry LaVar Thomas; his granddaughter, Heaven Harvey; two brothers, Purvis Deramus and Roosevelt Deramus.
He was educated in the Augusta Georgia School System. He accepted Christ and joined Shiloh Baptist Church at a very early age. He was known to many as Big John or Sputnik, the baseball and softball coach. One of his former baseball players stated, “Mr. Thomas started me and many of our friends’ ‘love’ for baseball. He gave us young black men our first exposure to organized baseball ‘The Soul Drifters’, when we weren’t allowed to play elsewhere. For that I will never forget him”. “Dwayne Bullard”
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of forty seven years, Martha Thomas; one son, John Thomas Jr. (Charlene); four daughters, Rose Mary Thomas, Mildred Woodley (David), Nancy Hawkins and Winter Harvey (DaMarkus); two brothers, Christopher Deramus (Ethel) and William Hardy (Sarah); two devoted nephews, Jewan Deramus (Tiffany) and Larry Jones; godson, Ronald Frisby; eleven grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
