Obituary for John E. Stokes
John Stokes, called “Gator” and “Phillip” by many entered his heavenly home on Monday, September 13, 2021. He was born on July 25, 1947 to Leanna Stokes-Clark and Lue Wesley Clark in Blackstone, VA.

At an early age John joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Blackstone, VA. He graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1966.

John served in the United States Air Force from 1967 until 1971 and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was also a part of the National Guard for nineteen years. He worked at Levi Strauss for many years and later went to work at Fort Pickett where he was employed for nineteen years.

John loved to watch WWE (wrestling) and Lifetime movies, doing crossword puzzles and trying to keep up with what was going on with politics.

John was joined in Holy Matrimony to Julia Irene Stokes on December 22, 1973, to this union one child was born.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lue Wesley Clark; his mother, Leanna Clark, and brother, Theodore Clark. He leaves to cherish fond and precious memories to: his devoted wife of forty-eight years, Julia Irene Stokes; loving and devoted daughter, Linnell Rose (Anthony); one devoted granddaughter, Myeshia Rose (Bert); one devoted great grandson, Michael Devon Atkinson, Jr.; one devoted special person that he loved as a granddaughter, Jayliah Kyle; son, Darryl Coleman (Latrice); granddaughter, Jasmine Coleman; grandson, Darryl Coleman, Jr.; two loving brothers, Earl Stokes of Blackstone, VA and Terry Clark (Sherry) of Stanton, VA; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great devoted nephews, Christopher Stokes, Alex Pritchett; devoted cousins, Olivia Bassfield, Kim Finney, Nichelle Finney, Shirley Elder and Kimberly Bates; two aunts, Dr. Elizabeth Davis (Norman) of Dinwiddie, VA and Rosa Clark of Blackstone, VA; one uncle, Ernest Brown of Petersburg, VA; five sisters-in-law, Shirley Pritchett, Thelma Goodwyn (Willie), Hattie Hill, Rosa Royal (Joseph), Margaret Booker (James); six brothers-in-law, James Finney (Dorothy), Charles Finney (Kim), Ricky Finney (Fonda), James Jones, Thomas Jones (Sarah), Frank Jones (Effie).

Viewing Friday, September 17, 2021 from 12 to 7PM.

Funeral Services Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Blackstone.. Interment church cemetery.
