Obituary for John E. Belle, Sr.
John Edward Belle, Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, November 2, 2018 at the age of 83.

He was born on February 14, 1935 in Crewe, Virginia to the late Ethel and Charles Belle, Jr. John was educated in the Nottoway public schools. He married Edna Mae Lynch in 1963. They remained in Crewe to raise their family where Edna worked for Amelia Dress Factory and he worked for Norfolk and Southern railroad until the early 1980’s when he could no longer do so due to an to illness.

After retiring, John enjoyed gardening, fishing, and doting on his children and grandchildren. He later served as a dedicated caregiver to his wife, Edna, until her death.

John was a patient and supportive man. He was always ready to help others when they needed him whether giving a ride to the store, mowing their lawns or repairing lawn mowers.

John also enjoyed sharing stories from both his humble upbringing and “working on the road” with the railroad. He often fondly told about helping his mother raise his younger siblings and swimming in Deep Creek. Whenever someone complained about work, his railroad stories were told to remind them what was “real” work--performing hard labor in all types of weather.

John is survived by his children, Gwendolyn Belle, Louise
Belle, and John Belle, Jr.; grandchildren, Shantele Chapman, Staci Belle, Darren Belle and Devin Belle; great-grandchildren Kaison Patterson and Brycen Belle; sister Edith Furman; sisters-in law Shirley Belle, Marie Foster, Delores Singh; brothers-in law Nathan Hicks, Edgar Hicks, Maurice Hicks; and many loving, caring and dedicated nieces, nephews and cousins who called frequently to check on him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; his siblings Lucille, Marie, Cecil, Robert, Alice, Walter, Helen; and sister-in law Rose.

Funeral Services Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Crewe. Interment Crewe Cemetery.
