Obituary for Joey L. Green
Joey Leon Green was the 5th of 7 children born to the union of the late Henry Madison, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Green on July 16, 1956 in Nottoway County, Virginia.
On Friday, February 11, 2022, he peacefully entered into eternal rest at his home in Crewe, Virginia.
Joey was baptized at an early age and was a member of New Poplar Mt. Baptist Church. He graduated from Nottoway High School in 1974. Joey had a long and successful career with Fort Pickett and the Nottoway Correctional Center until his health started to decline.
Growing up, Joey enjoyed fishing and hunting with his Dad and brothers. He loved sports and playing basketball with his friends was one of his favorite pastimes. His friends would often talk about his skills on the basketball court - especially his three-pointer long shot. He loved ‘embellishing’ those stories at family gatherings. His love of sports included his passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. He was a die-hard Steelers fan and was affectionately referred to as “Mean Joe Green” by many family members and friends. Joey also loved listening to soul and gospel music. He loved to sing along with the songs and could really carry a pretty good tune!
Joey had a sweet, easy, gentle spirit and was such an inspiration to all who knew him. He had a remarkable attitude and approach to life. In spite of overwhelming health issues, he never once complained or became bitter. He was always positive, strong in his faith and had a great sense of humor. He often used humor to put others at ease. He was a true example of grace, gratitude and humility. Joey loved his family dearly, and especially cherished his “baby Niecy” who was the absolute joy and love of his life.
Joey leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted family: one daughter, Shaniece “Niecy” Green; spouse, Lydia Green; step-son Sharrif Davis; Grandmother-in-law Lydia Kimber; sisters: Ruby Burrell (Cliff) of Silver Spring, MD and Sarah DeShazior (Carl) of Leesburg, VA; brothers: Henry Green, Jr. of Nottoway, VA and Tommie Green (Kearnetta) of Wilmington, NC; sister-in-law Alma Dodson; aunts and uncles: Marie Fitzgerald; Mildred Green; Estelle Epps; Ester Walker and Sylvester Green; nieces and nephews: Lorita Dodson; Daphne Gray (Tremaine); Corey Dodson; Michael Tucker (Angie) Kevin Tucker (Keshae) Lauren Burrell; Dallas Flores (Carlos); Christopher Green and Philip Green; great-nieces and nephews: Daneika Dodson; Vantwon Dodson; Kiandra Dodson; Shakiva Dodson; Tacorion Wright; Travis Tucker; Chris Tucker, Jada Tucker and Amina Flores; two very good friends: Leslie Woodson, Godfather to his daughter, and Michael Thomas; a special cousin Donna Chaffin and a host of other cousins and friends.
Joey was preceded in death by his loving parents, Henry and Sarah Green; siblings George Dodson, Doris Tucker and brother-in-law Nathaniel Tucker.
