Obituary for Joan L. Bates
Ms. Joan L. Bates departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at her home in Blackstone after suddenly becoming ill. Daughter of the late Mr. John and Mrs. Agnes Bates, she was born in Pennsylvania on January 19, 1944.
Joan graduated in 1962 from Luther H. Foster High School in Nottoway County. During her high school years, she was in the Honor Society, on the Patrol Force, a member of the FBLA, and an editor for the senior year book.
Ms. Bates moved to Durham, North Carolina where she attended Durham Business College and earned an Associates Degree in business. She lived in Durham for over thirty years before returning home to Blackstone. Although she didn’t have any children, she had many she treated as her own.
She is survived by:Â three brothers, Ronald (Mattie), John Jr. (Frankie) and Ashur (Lunette); three nieces, Karen, Tamara, and Carese; two great nieces, Kamaria and Alayjah; one great nephew, Jabari; one uncle Claiborne (Francis); two aunts, Jessie and Elsie; and a host of cousins and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery.
