Obituary for Joan J. Crawley
Early Sunday morning, May 23, 2021, at her home. Our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ, came for His beloved child, Joan Celestine Johnson Crawley and carried her to the Eternal home he prepared. Joan was born at St. Philips Hospital in Richmond, VA on March 25, 1954, to Evary and Phoebe Johnson.

While growing up, she accepted Christ, was baptized and joined the High Rock Baptist Church. She was educated in the Prince Edward Public Schools where she excelled.

On November 20, 1976, Joan was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Herbert Crawley, Sr.

Joan was affectionately called “Joannie” by her family and friends. She was a very happy and jovial person who always displayed a beautiful smile. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, Godmother, niece, cousin and friend. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and encouraged them to come eat, enjoy and/or take out. She especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren.

She was employed by Robert Shaw, Stackpole (Carbone of America), Beaumont Juvenile, Reiss Manufacturing Inc., and then Nottoway Correctional Center until her health declined.

Joan was preceded in death by: her mother , Phoebe Johnson; father, Evary Johnson; stepparents, Bertha and Edward Johnson; husband, Herbert Crawley, Sr.; brother, Evary Johnson, Jr.; and son, Herbert Crawley, Jr.

Engraved in our hearts to cherish her memory are: devoted daughter, Demetria; son, Durand Branch; grandchildren, DaQuan Johnson, Monay Johnson, Adashya Crawley, Jamarion Crawley, Hasan Crawley, Ja’Khel Crawley; aunts, Juiette-devoted (Harold), Virginia Foster, Jerleen Smith; uncle, Wilbert Saunders; brothers-in-law, Albert and Eric Crawley; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth, Mary, Pearl, Gwendolyn and Dorothy; sisters, Erica Johnson, Cora Cook and Mary Manns; brothers, George, Terry and Vincent Johnson; Godchildren, Tamonica Hubbard, Pamela Bowles, Alan Paige, Brian Rogers, Tyrone Fuller; devoted friends, Yvette Simmons, Kathleen Hubbard, Juiette Johnson (aunt), Arthur (Lamont) Johnson (cousin). She’s also remembered by many, many close cousins and friends. She had a special place in her heart for Monica Ward, Vhondrena Nunnally, Lanay Walker and Cierra Branch.

Viewing Monday, May 31, 2021 from 12 to 7pm. at the funeral home.

Funeral Service Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at 12:00 pm at High Rock Baptist Church, Rice. Interment Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
