Obituary for JoAnne S. Bland
JoAnne was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on August 21, 1939. She is the first-born child of Bertha Shelton and the late Deacon Claiborne Shelton. JoAnne attended A.G. Richardson Elementary School and Luther H. Foster High School where she met her future husband, Walter. She confessed a hope in Christ and at the age of 12 was baptized at Spring Hill Church. In her early teens JoAnne became interested in arts& crafts which would lead her into a life time on knitting, sewing and crocheting.
On May 19, 1957 JoAnne married Walter Bland and relocated to Chicago, IL where their union produced two children, Walter M. Jr. and Sharon Elizabeth (Cartman). After raising her family JoAnne resumed her education and graduated from Chicago State University in 1982 with a Bachelors Degree from the College of Education Home Economics Department.Â
JoAnne returned home to Blackstone every year and loved attending family and high school reunions along with revival at Spring Hill Church. JoAnne and Walter attended Third Baptist Church in Chicago, IL and in May 2007 they celebrated 50 years of marriage with their children and grandchildren.
JoAnne was preceded in death by Edward Lee Shelton (brother), Claiborne Shelton (father) and Walter M. Bland Sr. (husband).
Cherishing her memory are her mother Bertha Shelton, sister Ruby Jackson (Richard), brother Claiborne Shelton Jr., son Walter Jr. (Robin), daughter Sharon (Alvato Sr.), grandchildren Miquiya (Leroy), Alitra, Sharita, Alvato Jr, Ashley, Mearia, Heather, Sianna, Amiya, Ayanna and Amanuel, and great grandson Leroy Jr.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
Viewing will be on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
