Jessie Lee Hawkes Jr. peacefully transitioned during the early morning hours of May 29, 2023, at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, VA. Jessie was affectionately known as (Junior, Hawk and Hawkes). Jessie was born to the late Jessie James Hawkes and Evelyn Hamlin Hawkes on May 29, 1950, in Amelia County, Virginia, and he is the second oldest child of eight siblings.
He is proceeded in death by his Father Jesse James Hawkes and his Mother Evelyn Hamlin Hawkes and one younger Brother Reverend Bryant Hawkes.
Jessie attended Luther H. Foster School and was a part of the 1968 graduating class. After graduating from high school, he attended Southside Community College and obtained a two-year associate degree in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems. Upon receiving his degree, he went to work at Brown & Williamson Factory until they closed. After the closing of Brown & Williamson Jessie decided to pursue a position in his chosen career field and went to work at Virginia State University where he became an HVAC technician supervisor. Later Jessie went to work at Central State Hospital as a HVAC technician supervisor, and this was where he retired.
During his years of serving at Virginia State University Jessie became an active member of Good Shepperd Baptist Church and joined the men’s choir, it was during that time he completed his ministry studies. At 33 years of age, Jessie became a member of the M. W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, Pocahontas No.07, located in Petersburg, Va.
In Jessie’s younger years he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and playing pool. As he grew older some of his favorite past times were spent traveling, visiting with friends and family, barbecuing on the grill. He enjoyed entertaining and spending quality time with family, friends. Jessie was a die hard Pittsburg Steelers Fan. He loved to wear his burgo towel. Jessie had a deep and sincere love for his family, and friends.
Jessie was formerly married to Gloria Anderson of Hopewell, VA and from that union, one daughter Lakeishia was born.
He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter Lakeishia Hawkes Hardy and son in law Garry Hardy of Farmville, VA; one grandchild Alex Andre Hardy; a stepson, Malcolm Marcellus Jones of Chesterfield, VA; three step grandchildren Malcolm Marcellus Jones Jr., Sharonda Mone’ Jones, Marcellus Malcolm Jones; three brothers Reverend Kenneth Hawkes (Angelyn) of Dinwiddie, VA, Don Hawkes (Brenda) of Wilson, VA and Vincent Hawkes of Blackstone, VA; three sisters Carolyn Williams (Joshua) of New Kent, VA, Mary Tucker (Larry) of Amelia County, VA, Viola Person (Thurman) of Chester, VA; sister-in-law Jacqueline Gray Hawkes (Blackstone, VA); aunts Frances Hawkes, and Clara Hawkes of Blackstone, VA. He had several devoted nieces and nephews that came to him during his time of need, as well as cousins, and many close friends.

Funeral Sunday, June 4, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone. Interment Branches Runn Baptist Church, Amelia.
