Obituary for Jesse M. Reynolds, Sr.
Mr. Jesse McCoy Reynolds was born December 30, 1922, in Chathan, VA to the loving family of the late Deacon Nathaniel and Lucy Belcher Reynolds. Jesse was the fifth of fourteen children born through this union – Geneva Reynolds Hymond, Esabelle Reynolds Thomas, Sally Reynolds Weeks, Doris Reynolds Ligon, Jesse Reynolds, Omelia Reynolds Jackson, Eugene Reynolds, Emmett Reynolds, Alberta Reynolds Robertson, Louis Reynolds, Melvina Reynolds Brooks-Alfroukh, Bobby Reynolds, Clemmett Reynolds, and Donald Reynolds. Jesse was educated in the Nottoway County Public Schools. He was converted, baptized, and joined Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Jesse was married to the late Hazel Elizabeth Lewis Reynolds and this union was blessed with six children - Yvonne, Jesse Jr., Brenda, Carol, Rodney and Connie.  One son, Jesse McCoy Reynolds, Jr. pre-deceased him.  He was also pre-deceased by a grandson, Michael Shine and a great grand-daughter, Kayla-amari Reynolds.
Jesse enjoyed the outdoors. His love for the outdoors was seen in his favorite pastimes – fishing and hunting. He was self-employed – an owner of several small logging trucks and also worked at Fort Pickett. Jesse also loved watching and talking about baseball.  Although our hearts are sad with grief, our souls are uplifted because we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Father.
Therefore we are always confident, knowing that whilst
we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord.  We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
II Corinthians 5:6-8
We are so blessed and thankful for the ninety-one years of his life that Jesse shared with us.   He succumbed Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond, VA. Jesse was a resident of Lexington Court Nursing Home in Richmond, VA.
Jesse is survived by his son, Mr. Rodney Reynolds of Suitland, MD; four daughters, Rev. Dr. Yvonne Johnson of Blackstone, VA, Dr. Brenda Mayo of Richmond, VA, Dr. Carol Reynolds-Freeman of Ellicott City, MD, Mrs. Connie Reynolds-Shine of Ellicott City, MD; his sister, Melvina Reynolds Brooks-Alfroukh; four sons-in-law, Mr. Curtis Johnson, Mr. Robert Mayo, Sr., Mr. Larry Freeman and Mr. Richard Shine; three daughters-in-law, Betty Reynolds, Cynthia Reynolds, and Patricia Reynolds; twelve grandchildren, Soundra Ward,  Jesse Reynolds, III (Katrina), Nikisha Mayo, Robert Mayo, Jr., Shelley Mayo, Jarrett Freeman, Christopher Freeman (Jessica), Bryan Shine, Simone Reynolds, Gabrielle Reynolds, Rhamani Reynolds; two great grandchildren, Nathan Curtis Ward, Jaylen Reynolds, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is,
There is peace,
Where the Spirit of the Lord is
There is love,
There is comfort in life’s darkest hour
There is light and life,
There is help and power in the Spirit,
In the Spirit of the Lord!”
