Obituary for Jesse L. Hawkes, Sr.
On May 19, 2015, Jesse L. Hawkes, Sr. went to glory while home in Richmond, VA, surrounded by his family.  He was born April 11, 1944, to the late John Joseph and Channie Worsham Hawkes.
Jesse joined the Cedar Hill Baptist Church at an early age where he was a faithful member until he joined the military.  He graduated from Russell Grove High School with the class of 1964.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force in March 1965.  After he completed basic training he came back to get the love his life.  On September 3, 1965, he married Gladys Lee of Blackstone, VA who was beside her husband throughout his military career.  During this union they produced three children:  Aretha, LaShon & Jesse Jr. who traveled throughout the United States and afar enduring military life.  During his time of service he won many awards including several for working in the Commissary.  One of his fondest memories was traveling with his family to Guam where his plane made a pit stop in Hawaii and he came face to face with Tina Turner, his favorite singer.  After mom convinced him to talk to Tina, he was able to get her to sign his orders.  He retired after 20+ years in April 1985 as Tsgt with Honorable Discharge, at which time he moved his family home to Richmond, VA.
He is survived by his wife Gladys, his children: Aretha Coleman (Samuel), LaShon (Calvin), Jesse, Jr; his grandchildren:  Tina, Brittney, Marleana and Samuel; Great Grandchildren:  Cashea, Elijah, and Tiana.  He also leaves to cherish his memories three brothers:  Carl, Sr. (Shirley), Raymond, Sr. (Veda), Clinton, Sr. (Mabel) and a sister Josephine Sterns (Ralph), brothers in law Meredith Lee (Patricia) and Howard Lee and sister in law Joyce Moseley (Wilbert), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also included is his longtime caregiver who has stuck with us for the past eight years Venesia Johnson who is now an honorary member of the family.  Faithful friends include Charles Goode, Sharon Wynn and Maude Lee.
In his past-time he loved to BBQ, fish, watch the Washington Redskins play football and any team play baseball.  He loved to entertain with cookouts and BBQ’s even in the middle of winter (ask Mom).  He was always the life of the party (ask Uncle Raymond).  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and partaking in liquid refreshments (ask Uncle Clint).  He stayed in the clubs, loved the women (ask Uncle CL) and he always got into trouble when he came home (ask Aunt Josephine).  In all, he was a very lovable man and will be truly missed (ask his family).
