In Loving Memory of James Edward (Sonny) Booker born January 21, 1951 to the late Willie James Booker and the late Hattie T. Booker.
It is with profound sorrow with Praises that we announce Sonny’s transition to Heaven on June 12, 2023 at Johnson Willis Hospital, Richmond Virginia leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories.
At an early age Sonny confessed Christ and joined the Mt. Level Baptist Church, Amelia Virginia, proclaiming unwavering dedication to God, Church and Family. Within the walls of the Church his voice resonated with a soulful power that moved hearts and lifted spirits. Additionally, his rhythmic beats as a church drummer provided the foundation for songs of praise, infusing worship services that united the congregation in joyful celebration.
Sonny’s professional journey was equally notable. Retiring from the Virginia Department of State Police after 31 years of dedicated service. He exemplified loyalty, commitment, and a strong work ethic. His contributions to his workplace were highly regarded, and he leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence.
Sonny’s heroism extended far beyond his professional and musical talents. His selfless acts of love and kindness touched the lives of many by training, teaching and sharing his talents with the Youth. Also, he was a skilled master mechanic leaving an indelible impact on our community. He was a beacon of strength and resilience, facing life's challenges with unwavering determination. Sonny embodied the qualities of compassion, integrity and laughter as he always had the ability to make you smile. He served as a role model for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He leaves to cherish memories: his loving extraordinary spouse, Joyce Thompson Booker of 48 years, devoted son James Edward (Riko) Booker II, daughter in law “daughter” Canzata (Zay) Booker and Grandson James Edward Booker III who brought immense joy and pride to his life. He relished every moment spent with them. Sisters who shared a bond of unmeasureabe love and respect Joyce Worsham (George (Johnny) Henrico Virginia, Charlotte Tabb (Rudy) Richmond Virginia.

“Words of Sonny favorite song”
If I can only make it to heaven…That will be good enough for me
Heaven, where the streets are made of gold..Heaven where a saint can soothe his weary soul
Heaven, I sit down in the crystal seat..Heaven That will, that will, that will be good enough for me.
