Obituary for James Sherman Barley
James Sherman Barley “Shirt Tail” entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Jersey Shore Medical Center Hospital Neptune, NJ. He was born in Amelia, VA on July 8, 1951 to the late Sherman and Corrine Barley, the fourth child of five siblings.
At an early age he was baptized and joined the Little Union Baptist Church. James attended Amelia County High School after which he moved to Bridgeport, CT for several years.
After living in Bridgeport for a while he came back home and went to work at Westvaco, for which he worked for many years until they went out of business. Later he moved to Tinton Falls, NJ where he enjoyed life until his health started to fail.
He had a quiet spirit, enjoyed the company of others, and was always listening to “Oldie-Goodie” and watching, “Sanford & Son”. He loved to dress, and his favorite attire was a color suit with matching shoes.
James was preceded in death by his mother, father and one son. He leaves to cherish his fond memories to his wife, Norma Oulds Barley; children, Tawana Robinson (James); one stepson, Darnell Oulds; four grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis (Arthur), Lovelean Bailey , Caldonia (Peany) and twin sister Judy Booker (Gregg); three sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Pete), Thelma and Rosalee Mayo; two brothers-in-law. Arthur and Wilbert (Chris); two aunts, Lucy (George) of Powhatan, VA and Pearlee Eggleston of Tinton Falls, NJ; two uncles, Morven Barley (Lillian) and Randell Barley; devoted friend, Margaret Little of Tinton Falls, NJ; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 1200 Noon at Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home Chapel, Amelia. Interment private.
