James Shirley Dyson Sr. 86, of Blackstone VA, answered the call from our heavenly father and transitioned to his heavenly home on July 13, 2023 at Johnston Willis Hospital-Richmond, VA, after a long and courageous fight against cancer and other health issues. During his last few weeks of hospitalization, he was visited by many family members and friends who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest just as James would want them.
James, who was affectionately known as “Uncle Boots”, “Unc”, “Jimmy D”, “Grampa Dyson” and “PopPop”, was the tenth child of thirteen born to Walter Dyson Sr. & Mary (Ford) Dyson on January 29, 1937 in Crewe Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and seven brothers.
On October 21, 1972, he married his sweetheart, the former Marion Lucille Williams and from this union were two children: Jacqueline W. Ingram and James S. Dyson, Jr.
In 1957, James graduated from Luther H. Foster High School of Crewe VA, and then attended Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte NC where he received his Bachelor’s of Arts degree May 1968. In May 1977, he received his Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision degree.
After completing two years of active duty in the U.S. Army, James returned to Nottoway County where he worked various jobs. In 1967, James began his teaching career with the Nottoway County Public School system and retired in 2000. During this time he served as a Teacher, a Principal, an Administrator and an Assistant Principal. James had a real passion for learning and he shared that with his family and the thousands of children and their families whose lives he touched over the years.
At a young age, James joined the Bethesda Presbyterian Church of Nottoway VA. He was a very active member who held the titles of Church Clerk and Elder until his health declined. He worked under the direction of various Pastors and closely worked with the Presbytery of the James, Richmond VA.
With a glint in his eyes that could light up the night, James would greet everyone with a big smile, a hug or a hand shake. He loved being outdoors, gardening and watching sports of all kinds. Most of all he loved fishing.
James leaves to cherish his memory, a loving wife of 50 years, Marion W. Dyson of the home. A devoted daughter, Jacqueline W. Ingram (Henry) of Kenbridge, VA., and son James S. Dyson, Jr. of Washington D.C.
Three grandchildren: Hendre’ LaTrell Ford of Richmond, VA., Mari E. Hoover (Maurice) of Allentown, PA and Nola G. Dyson of Washington D.C.
Three great-grandchildren: Destiny B. Jeter of Midlothian VA, Kamira R. Hoover of Allentown PA, and Kingston N. Hoover of Allentown PA. One sister, Barbara D. Bridgeforth of Crewe VA. Two brothers-in-law, John E. Williams of Richmond VA and Clarence E. Williams of Blackstone VA. One sister-in-law Arlene G. Williams of Blackstone VA. A daughter-in-law Kathleen Dyson of Washington D.C. A Devoted nephew who was just like a son, Alvin E. Dyson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
