Obituary for James Otis Gallion
Trustee James Otis Gallion, was born January 26, 1934. He is the son of the late James and Sadie J. Gallion of Victoria, VA. Otis was educated in the public school system of Lunenburg County. Near the completions of his education Otis decided not to return to school and decided to work in the family business.
He started with his father who worked by day in Pulp Wood and evening with tobacco. As time would go on they concentrated on hardwood, producing railroad cross tires. Later in life he would join forces in the logging business with a friend Herbert Jefferson and they shared a partnership until his health failed. He only worked two others jobs in his life, as a tobacco warehouse worker and a summer at Fort Pickett in the small engine department.
Otis joined the Pleasant Oak Baptist Church and along with his sister Mary and a few others were the first to be baptized in the new inside pool. He later was asked to serve the role of Trustee, which he accepted.
On December 18, 1959 Otis was joined in holy matrimony to Thelma Foster and to this union two children were born, Otis L. and Dawn F.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 49 years, Thelma F.; his son Otis L. (Stephenia) of Midlothian, VA and daughter Dawn (John) of Mebane, NC and two granddaughters Brooke and Jewel. One sister Mary M. Harris (Robert) of Blackstone, VA and one brother Morris “Junnie” (Ada) of Randallstown, MD, sisters in law: Mary F. Rowe (James), Lillie F. Jennings (Lee), Bertha Bland and Doris L. Foster, one niece Shirley and one nephew Arnold, who he helped raise as his own children. A number of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
Otis was a hard-worker and a loving husband and father. His good heart and friendliness earned him the affection and respect of all who knew him. He was called from labor to reward after a great fight against cancer.
