James could hear the heavenly angels calling his name. On Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, VA, God called James E. Marshall, Sr. for eternal rest.
James Edward Marshall was born in Nottoway County to late Albert Jones and Mary Francis Marshall Johnson on May 19, 1940. He attended Nottoway Training School and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1960. James joined Jones R.Z.U.A. Church at an early age.
James served in the United States Navy from 1962 until 1967. He worked at Commonwealth Tobacco Company and Virginia Marble of Kenbridge, VA; Southern States of Blackstone, VA.
He loved spending his time reading the comics, playing solitaire, crossword puzzles, looking at westerns and spending time with his grandchildren. He shared a love for extended family at Heritage Hall Family. Oh, how James loved the “Washington Commanders”.
On January 2, 1962, he was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Sarah B. Marshall. They shared forty-three years of marriage. To this union five children were born, Vanessa, Penny, James Jr., Claiborne, and one preceded him in death, William Marshall. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother: Alfred Marshall and Theodore Johnson.
James leaves to cherish memories: two daughters, Vanessa (James) Goode, Penny (Gary) Tucker of Blackstone, VA; two sons, James Marshall Jr. , Claiborne Marshall of Frederick, MD; one sister, Claire White of Blackstone VA; two sister-in-laws, Mittie Pearly of Dolphin, VA and Brenda Marshall of Macon, GA.; seven grandchildren, Kei Thorton, Kamell Goode, LaTasha Tucker, Teiera (Jamaal) Jones, James Marshall III, Maurcie Marshall, Diamond Marshall; one god-grandchild, Nikia Worsham; sixteen great-grandchildren; cousins, Ophelia Pretlow, Rev. Nellie Myrick both of Prince George, VA, James Branch of Petersburg, VA, Charles Bragg of Mckenny, VA , Rosa Cabins of Blackstone, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 1 PM W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone.
Interment Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.
