Obituary for James E. Bates, Jr.
On Thursday, January 14, 2021, James Earnest Bates, Jr., age 91 of Ford, VA was in the presence of his of daughter, Linda Locket when he peacefully transitioned into eternal rest here on earth but awoke in the presence of the Lord.
James was born on January 26, 1929 in Dinwiddie, VA to the late James Earnest Bates, Sr. and Elizabeth Booker Bates.
James was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Ford, VA.
On April 11, 1952, James marriage to Lillian Harris brought them the blessings of five wonderful children. He was preceded in death by his wife.
James served in the United States Army active duty from November 10, 1950 to November 13,1952; he then served in the Army Reserve until October 29, 1956. After leaving the military, his work history consisted of Noldes Bros Bakery, Leete Tire & Auto Center and Dominion Energy, Petersburg, VA. He retired from Dominion Energy in 1992.
He is lovingly survived by his children: Cheryl and Vidette Bates, Richmond, VA, Gerald Bates, Chesapeake, VA, James Edward Bates, (Belinda) Atlanta, Georgia and Linda Locket (Wayne), Hopewell, VA; four granddaughters: Shameeka, Pierre, Jasmine and Aliah Bates; three grandsons: Geremy (Latashia), David (Karen), and Jaedus Bates; three great grandchildren: Layla and Cameron Bates; Gabriela Elias, one brother: John Bates, one sister: Ella Crayton, a host of nieces, nephews; devoted friends: Karl and Rena Togger; Jimmy Edmonds and other faithful relatives and friends.
James cherished and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He had a special way of touching others and offering comfort in many ways. He was always willing to share his knowledge whether it was about work, family or hunting; for this, he will be remembered.
There will be no public viewing.
Private Services on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 2:00 PM at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia.
