James Acie Fowlkes Jr. was born January 24, 1947, to the late Doretha Woodrum Fowlkes and James Acie Fowlkes, Sr. in Nottoway County, Virginia. On Friday, January 31, 2025, he peacefully entered eternal rest at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
He graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in Nottoway, Virginia in 1967. After high school, he attended and graduated from East Coast Polytechnic Institute (ECPI) in 1969. He was united in holy matrimony to his loving wife, Doris Jennings Fowlkes for 57 years.
James was a dedicated painter who spent 21 years working at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, Virginia, before retiring in 1998. In addition to his career, he owned and operated Fowlkes & Son’s Painting Contractors, a business he proudly passed down to his son in 2007. Beyond his profession, James had a deep love for baseball, both as a player and a coach. He was a devoted fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers and passionately supported the Philadelphia Eagles football team.
James was a loving and devoted, husband, father, grandfather and friend, whose warmth and generosity touched everyone that he met. He never knew a stranger and never ended a phone call without saying “Love you and take care”. Affectionately known as Acie, Bo, Hook or Jukie by those closest to him, James had a heart that was always open to others. His generosity knew no bounds - he never hesitated to help someone in need. With a quick wit and a no-nonsense attitude, James had a way of keeping everyone on their toes while also making them laugh. He spoke his mind with honesty and love, and his sharp sense of humor made every moment with him memorable. Whether his kindness, laughter, or unwavering support, he left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Sr., mother Doretha, sister, Gloria Fowlkes, daughter, Antoinette Fowlkes Miller, niece Chantelle Spinney and nephew Anthony Williams.
