Obituary for Horace S. Boyd, Jr.
Horace S. Boyd, Jr. was born June 5, 1938 to Horace Sr. and Cennie Craddock Boyd. He departed this life on Friday, February 11, 2022 at his home in Blackstone, VA.
Horace attended Luther H. Foster High School where he played football, basketball and baseball. He graduated with the class of 1957. At an early age he joined Cellar Creek Baptist Church in Blackstone, VA.
After high school, he enjoyed playing recreational baseball with the Wellville All Stars. He loved coaching little league baseball (Green Socks) and the pony league baseball (Renegades). Horace enjoyed traveling and visiting his family, hunting, fishing, and grilling out. He also enjoyed working around the house and loved doing his yardwork.
He worked for the State of VA at Central State Hospital for 15 years. After leaving Central State, he completed 20 years of service as a Correctional Officer with the Federal Correctional Institute (FCI) Petersburg located in Hopewell VA. After retiring from the FCI, he worked several years for the State of VA again in the security department at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, VA.
Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Cennie Craddock Boyd and Horace Boyd, Sr.; his wife Florence Boyd; a daughter, Cynthia F. Boyd; and two brothers, John Boyd and Willie Boyd. He is survived by two sons, Greg Boyd (Melba Andrews) of Blackstone, VA and Rodney Boyd of Petersburg, VA; four grandchildren, Thomas D. Bragg of Blackstone, VA, Senethia Bragg-Hardy (Kevin) of Richmond, VA, Brittany Bragg of Richmond, VA and Justin Boyd of South Hill, VA; five great grandchildren, five sisters-in-law; two close family friends whom he loved like his children, Sylvia Fitzgerald of Blackstone, VA and Chad Fortune of Petersburg, VA; other relatives and friends.
